The 2023 Fresh Impressions Art Show runs March 20 through April 25 at the Florence Events Center (FEC). The art show includes work from our Siuslaw Middle School and Siuslaw High School creative art and pottery students. The art show is viewable at the FEC Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Artist Reception is Thursday, April 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. with the awards ceremony starting at 6 p.m.

The PreACT test will be offered to tenth-grade students the first week of April for students who pre-register with School Counselor Laura Osbon by Thursday, March 23. Students interested in the test may send an email or stop by her office and register for the test. The PreACT was adopted as Oregon's nationally-normed college entrance practice test. The purpose of the assessment is to predict the success of students on college entrance exams and provide practice for students.

Siuslaw High School is holding an open house event for eighth-grade students (next year's ninth graders) and their families on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., We will have two welcome sessions. The first starts at 6 p.m. The second kicks-off at 7 p.m. These are repeating events intended to accommodate as many schedules as possible. At both sessions, we will review next steps in getting students registered for classes and offer tours of the high school. High school staff will visit Siuslaw Middle School the very next day, March 22, to help eighth graders make their official requests for high school classes next fall. The high school staff is anxious to meet your students as next year’s 9th graders and we hope to see you on the 21st.

The district has launched community outreach surveys for the school board's strategic planning initiative and the ODE Integrated Guidance process. School board strategic planning will be an ongoing process, with these surveys being an intermediate part of the process. From the data collected here, focus groups will be formed to examine district and building level data to help inform both goals and strategies for future operations. This will overlap into next school year. ODE's Integrated Guidance process is an alignment of six initiatives that have common elements, in an attempt to decrease redundancy in state reporting requirements by districts. This first draft aligns: High School Success, Student Investment Account, Continuous Improvement Planning, Career & Technical Education, Every Day Matters (student attendance), and Early Indicator Intervention Systems. Surveys are split to address four focal groups: parents & guardians, community members, students, and teachers & staff. Surveys will be open through the end of the day, Monday, March 20, and the Lane ESD staff will run a simple tally on the results so district staff can prepare initial reports for the board in April and prepare for the community forum groups. Siuslaw School District greatly appreciates our 22 bus drivers and associated staff members. National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day is February 22. It’s a reminder and an opportunity to say thanks to the people responsible for getting our students to and from school safely every school day. Thank you to our transportation department for all they do to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students! We are thankful that our bus drivers encourage our students when they see them in the morning and later in the afternoon when students return home.
