Family Bilingual Literacy Nights begin April 18 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays​ from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. at Siuslaw Elementary School, room 9. This evening program will run through August and is designed to assist and support families with English literacy development and is for families who value biliteracy as a relevant skill. There are adult and school-aged children English lessons and practice as well as preschool language activities for children who are not yet in Kindergarten. Attendees can expect to network and visit with families, learn English, and work on reading, writing, and communication skills. To register to attend this program, email kkeppol@siuslaw.k12.or.us. A meal will be provided on the introductory night on Tuesday, April 18.​

​Join us for Junior/Senior Prom 2023 Saturday, May 6 at the Florence Events Center from 8 to 11 p.m. This year's theme is ‘Arabian Nights.’ The night will be filled with dancing, bright colors, an assortment of desserts, and perhaps some exotic animals. Tickets will be sold the 2 weeks leading up to Prom. Make sure to get your tickets early as the prices will increase the second week of sales! The week of April 24-28 individual tickets will be $25 and couple tickets $45. The second week of sales, starting May 1-5, ticket prices will increase. The presenters include In Our Backyard, an organization that fights human trafficking through education, mobilization, and partnership, Dr. Susan Inman, a Florence Soroptimist member and local expert on human trafficking, as well as Mike Gallagher, who recently retired from the Portland Police Bureau and served his last 11 years in the Sex Trafficking Unit and was also a Task Force Officer out of Portland's FBI office. The Community Awareness Night will include a Human Trafficking Expert Panel Q&A, the opportunity to hear from national and community experts on best practices to protect your kids and teens, and real talk for parents about social media safety. Additionally, learn how children are at risk every day and in every home if they have internet access. Furthermore, human trafficking can happen to anyone--no matter race, age, or gender. The PTA Talent Show is open to all students in Siuslaw School District, but students must audition. Pick up an audition form from your school office or download at tinyurl.com/PTATalentShow. Audition forms are due to your school office by Friday, April 7, at 8:30 a.m. Auditions will be held April 17 and 18 after school in the Elementary Music Room. The PreACT test will be offered to tenth-grade students the first week of April for students who pre-register with School Counselor Laura Osbon by Thursday, March 23. Students interested in the test may send an email or stop by her office and register for the test. The PreACT was adopted as Oregon's nationally-normed college entrance practice test. ​Siuslaw High School is holding an open house event for eighth-grade students (next year's ninth graders) and their families on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., We will have two welcome sessions. The first starts at 6 p.m. The second kicks-off at 7 p.m. These are repeating events intended to accommodate as many schedules as possible. At both sessions, we will review next steps in getting students registered for classes and offer tours of the high school. High school staff will visit Siuslaw Middle School the very next day, March 22, to help eighth graders make their official requests for high school classes next fall. The high school staff is anxious to meet your students as next year’s 9th graders and we hope to see you on the 21st.

​The district has launched community outreach surveys for the school board's strategic planning initiative and the ODE Integrated Guidance process. School board strategic planning will be an ongoing process, with these surveys being an intermediate part of the process. From the data collected here, focus groups will be formed to examine district and building level data to help inform both goals and strategies for future operations. This will overlap into next school year. ODE's Integrated Guidance process is an alignment of six initiatives that have common elements, in an attempt to decrease redundancy in state reporting requirements by districts. This first draft aligns: High School Success, Student Investment Account, Continuous Improvement Planning, Career & Technical Education, Every Day Matters (student attendance), and Early Indicator Intervention Systems. Surveys are split to address four focal groups: parents & guardians, community members, students, and teachers & staff. Surveys will be open through the end of the day, Monday, March 20, and the Lane ESD staff will run a simple tally on the results so district staff can prepare initial reports for the board in April and prepare for the community forum groups. PTA Hosting Adolescent Wellness and Suicide Prevention Forum Wednesday, March 15, at 6 PM at Siuslaw Middle School . The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health among young people and to highlight the resources available in Florence, Oregon that promote well-being and safety. Several local and regional organizations have volunteered to support our community at this event, including Coastal Counseling, LLC, Siuslaw Outreach Services, Mobile Crisis Response Team, Oregon Integrated Health, PFLAG, Options Counseling and Family Services, Lines for Life, Lane County Public Health, among others. The focus of this talk will be on how to recognize signs of distress in kids and teenagers, what to do when those signs appear, and how to help someone who may be struggling.

Siuslaw School District greatly appreciates our 22 bus drivers and associated staff members. ​National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day is February 22.​ It’s a reminder and an opportunity to say thanks to the people responsible for getting our students to and from school safely every school day.​ Thank you to our transportation department for all they do to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students!
