Siuslaw High School Families,

Today, December 11, 2024, Siuslaw High School experienced the failure of the main circulation pump that provides heat to a significant portion of the high school building. This will result in general school conditions that are not conducive to teaching and learning. Every student at Siuslaw High School has one or more classes in the affected areas.

The earliest we anticipate repairs to be complete is Wednesday, December 18th.

To ensure learning can continue as uninterrupted as possible, we are moving three days of instruction to digital delivery. Below is a timeline for the coming days:

Friday, December 13th - This is converting to a non-school day for all SHS students. The other schools in the district will meet as scheduled. Teachers will be using this time to prepare three days of digital instruction next week.

The exception is for students in the SHS Life Skills and Bridge programs. These students will have a regularly scheduled school day, though the rhythms of the day may be different.

Monday, December 16th through Wednesday, December 18th- Instruction will be delivered digitally to all SHS students through their Chromebooks. The regular bell schedule will apply to all three days with classes beginning at 8:15. Students are to log into the Google Classroom or Google Meets for each of their period classes. Teachers will meet virtually with students to explain the content for the day. Virtual attendance is the expectation for all students and will be recorded each period.

Here, again, the exception is for SHS Life Skills and Bridge program students who will have a regularly scheduled day since those classrooms are not impacted by the outage.

For students with no home internet access, we will have classroom space set aside at school on all three of these days. Students are welcome to come to school to access the internet in a classroom unaffected by the loss of heat.  This will allow them the same access to digital learning as students at home. Buses will still be running regular schedules for the Elementary and the Middle schools. High School students can take the bus to the High School as well.

Digital learning is not a model that works equally well across subjects. Some classes and assignments are likely to look different from what we can provide in face-to-face instruction. Our teachers are working hard to create relevant learning experiences that can maintain learning despite this interruption.

Your student may get specific instructions from a teacher for on-campus activities IF they are able to transport themselves to and from school. This is likely to be for College coursework and performance-based classes.

If the repairs go as planned, we will be back to regularly scheduled days for the end of next week.
