SMS Families, have you heard of the One-Chip Challenge? How about the World's Hottest Gummy Bear? There is a Tik Tok challenge that has been gaining some steam lately and it has had a significant impact on school. We've had students distributing and eating these insanely hot food items at school. Numerous students have gone home with vomiting and stomach cramping. Please talk with your students about the possible side effects of eating foods with high capsaicin. You can find more information about talking to your student about it here: https://smartsocial.com/post/one-chip-challenge If you child consumes one of these items, there is information from Poison Control here: https://www.poison.org/articles/is-the-one-chip-challenge-dangerous Please do not let your child bring these items to school.

The Siuslaw School District has adopted a program called Sources of Strength, a universal suicide prevention program. SOS is designed to build protective influences and reduce the likelihood that vulnerable youth will become suicidal. The program trains students as peer leaders and connects them with adult advisors at school and in the community. We have a great team of peer mentors and adult leaders. Keep an eye on our social media to learn more about Sources of Strength!

In order to make time for necessary professional development, Siuslaw Middle School and Siuslaw High School are announcing a change that will affect one day of student learning. On Friday, January 7, all 6th-12th Grade students will be dismissed at 12:00. This will allow our staff to attend an otherwise unavailable training in the Character Strong Program. Lunch will be served from 11:30-12:00. Buses will arrive at noon for students who regularly use district transportation. Walkers, bikers and parent pick-up students are dismissed at 11:30. Siuslaw Elementary School will remain on their regular Friday schedule. No element of the elementary day will be affected by these changes.
